At Mutual Contractors, we are widely known for our ability to complete both small and large projects on time and on budget. We have extensive experience with public projects ranging from facility remodeling to building large parks, in addition to private home remodels, guest house builds, and preserving historic facilities.
Founded by Janet Shands and Pearl Sims in 1998, Mutual Contractors is a women-owned TDOT DBE and EDWOB business. Together they have over 40 years of experience leading and managing Mutual Contractors to be one of Nashville’s most successful women-owned businesses. As of 2015 Mutual Contractors is one of only 4% of women-owned contractors in the nation to break $1 million annually.
Mutual Contractors has completed multiple projects for Nashville's Metro Government, including high visibility and complex projects you might drive by daily. Janet Shands

Janet Shands is Mutual Contractors' heart, soul, and boots on the ground every day. She is motivated, results oriented, and has over 25 years of experience in construction and over 30 years of experience working in the community in both public and private sectors (including non-profits). She's quick to get ahead of potential issues, identify problems as they arise, and dismantle any barriers in order to efficiently complete projects. Her skill in coordinating subcontractors, schedules, reports, materials, and change orders will ensure your project flows smoothly. She has advanced degrees from Vanderbilt University, was a UNC national athlete, and when not on the job site, you'll likely find her running around with her lab, Caleb.
Pearl Sims, PhD
Owner and Business Manager
Pearl Sims keeps Mutual Contractors' projects organized, on-time, and on-budget with her expertise in management and organizational leadership. She has over 25 years of experience in construction and over 30 years of experience in property management. She is a retired Vanderbilt University Professor with experience working with international and local leaders to complete complex community projects. She served as the Executive Director of the Middle TN Workforce Investment Board for two Nashville mayors and is a Commissioner on the Metro Planning Commission. She is active in Leadership Nashville, in the American Planning Association, and in the Edgehill neighborhood. When not working, she's probably facetiming her grandson, Axel.
